WRI has reviewed the Foodsteps food manufacturers and scope 3.1 methodologies and validated that they are consistent with and meet the requirements under the Coolfood Methodology.

This external validation reinforces Foodsteps’ position as a leading platform for credible, science-backed sustainability assessments in the food industry – helping businesses measure, reduce, and report emissions with confidence.

This builds on Coolfood's review of Foodsteps' meals methodology in March, which is also consistent with and meets the requirements under the Coolfood methodology. Coolfood is an initiative of WRI which helps organisations measure and reduce their food-related GHG emissions, and the Coolfood methodology is a globally recognised standard.

Why it matters

As a founding member of the Science-Based Targets initiative and host of the Greenhouse Gas Protocol, WRI sets some of the most rigorous standards for emissions measurement and reduction. Their latest review confirms that:

  • Our Scope 3 methodology meets expectations for transparent, auditable assessments of purchased food and drink emissions.
  • Our manufacturer product footprint methodology enables ingredient-level impact assessments using a combination of primary and harmonised secondary data – supporting supplier reporting, product reformulation, and measurable impact reduction.
  • Our dedication to mass-based calculations, high-specificity emissions factors, and supplier engagement ensures more accurate, action-oriented outputs.

With regulatory pressure mounting and customer demands rising, WRI’s Coolfood methodology validation signals that Foodsteps’ methodology stands up to scrutiny.
